[ Well, this day was going to come sooner or later. Maybe. He just... didn't actually think he'd be around for when it did.
So many people have left him behind here. Against their will, sure, much like all of this is, but. He still thinks of it as that: being left behind. Marcos being the latest and, honestly, he hadn't even really felt anything when he found the other mutant had disappeared some week-ish ago. He's just... tired. Of losing people.
He's there in their house that they've had for almost two years now, sitting there on the couch and just looking around as he rolls a ball of fire in his palm. There's only about a day and a half until they're all to be sent back to their worlds and he doesn't know how he feels about it. This is probably the closest he's ever been to having anything resembling a home and to lose that now... well, it sucks.
When Caliban arrives, he flicks his gaze over to the demon, lounging there on the couch with that ball of flame still rolling around in the palm of his hand; Caliban has a shitty bunch of Nothing to go back to. ]
[ Caliban was mostly just full of rage, the sort that happened when one felt powerless which was something the demon hated to feel- and yet he felt like there was nothing he could truly do to prevent this city from ripping him away from John. Or even preventing his death or his insanity, at the very least.
Caliban had told everyone in the Grey Room to either go home or to drink the bar dry with their sorrows since even that didn't exactly matter at present.
Besides he did at the very least know of something he wished to do before his time in this city ended. Well, besides killing a few guards and making sure the city was well aware of his displeasure at the situation. It doesn't take long before he's back at the home and strolling back into the living room- his eyes flicking down along the sight of John with that flame teasing along the palm of his hand. ]
Hello.
[ Caliban said simply as he moved towards the couch where the mutant lay- before a hand reached down to brush along the other's jawline as he towered over him.]
If I ask you to do something, even if you know what the future holds at present. Would you still say yes?
[ That touch is something he won't even realize he'll miss because, well, he won't remember. Just as Alec doesn't remember him, just as Nate doesn't remember him. Once he leaves here, all of this and everyone he's come to know in it for the past two and half years will be scrubbed from his memories. As if they never existed.
Rolling the ball of flame over the backs of his fingers, he looks up to the demon, slight tilt of his head. ]
As long as it's not to remember you because we both know that's not gonna happen.
[ No matter how much either of them may want it. ]
[ He seemed amused as he met those eyes. He knew such a fate waited for them both- that their memories wouldn't last whatever the city did when it sent them home. It hadn't when he was sent back briefly and it certainly wouldn't be any different this time. ]
As we do not have much time in this city- I would rather like to have what little time we have left together and use it to fulfill a promise that we tabled more than once.
[ He said softly as he lowered himself to meet the other's eyes properly as that hand moved down to brush along the other's chest.]
[ Of all the things, he can't exactly say that was what he expected to hear.
It's true though. They'd danced around such an idea a couple times, mostly when John was bored or simply curious about the matter. Ever since Alec had more or less rejected him in that area, however, he's never wanted to touch it again and he knows Caliban knows that. So when he's asked that, he doesn't reply right away. Rather, he just stares to him, holding that ball of flame there on the backs of his fingers. ]
Why?
[ The word is soft then and he lets the ball of flame extinguish within the clutches of his fingers. ]
[ He's expecting that answer because, well, it's *John*, and he wouldn't him if he simply granted him such a request after all the times they simply...did not end up doing such a drastic move between the two of them. ]
The lack of memory isn't the point, John. I do not wish to leave this world without you as my husband. Without us joined in such a way.
[ He pointed out- just as softly as he sucked on the inside of his cheek before he continued.]
I married Sabrina because I wanted her throne. I might have loved her after but such a move was not without its motives.
I want to marry you because you are the mortal I love most, John. And perhaps the universe will honor such a thing even beyond this city. I would marry you if we had mere seconds to hold such a memory together. We have hours. I will take every moment I can as a blessing.
Despite the honesty which he gives him for an answer, the fire manipulator can only look down to his fingers. To think that when he leaves here, he'll lose the gifts he'd been given from both Nate and Caliban in regards to borrowing their fire and thus, "creating it" himself in ways he never thought he'd be able to prior to coming here.
So much is to be lost when this place kicks them out.
For a long moment, there's only silence he can give the demon. They've been through so much together and Caliban has put up with so much with him, it almost seems unfair— cruel to not give him this one last thing.
Sigh on his lips, he settles back against the couch then, looking up to the demon. ]
You know for a demon from Hell, you're really sappy and romantic.
[ The demon takes in a breath he in no way needs as the other breaks that silence- he was almost certain the other would say no. Even now- even after everything. John had been delaying and putting it off for various reasons. Most of the empty excuses but...well, why would the end of the city change such a thing?
He does give a simple lopsided smile as he straightens himself up to stand as he keeps his eyes locked with the others.]
Would you prefer me sadistic and cruel? I suppose that is why you first enjoyed me.
[ He pointed out with a little click of his tongue.]
And I rather blame you for the more human traits I seem to have those days.
[ Closing his hand into a fist, he gently baps at his leg over and over again while he looks up to— while he watches Caliban from where he sits. Part of him struggles with the thought that it's Caliban who wants to marry him and not Alec, his first love. That still stings and he'll be glad when he forgets that with his leaving here, but. He still thinks marriage is stupid and knows that it doesn't mean anything here to begin with. Contracts do.
However, Caliban's put up with a lot from him — more than anyone else ever has, he thinks, and so he sighs again as he looks off to the side. Quiet. Contemplating. Forever until the very end, it seems, a complicated fire boy. ]
[ Since there hasn't been a *no* yet, Caliban's just watching John with a tilt of his head. His blond curls fall to one side as he watches John...make up his mind. Honestly, it didn't matter what Caliban ultimately said since really the only person that could make John do anything was...well, John.
The demon sucked on the inside of his cheek at that question before he answered easily enough. ]
Here. No guests. No honeymoon gangbang after. Just the two of us. [ The middle part was a little bit of a joke, his eyes twinkling a little.]
An easy and painless ceremony. I use some magic on a ribbon. I tie it around our hands and say some words-
Simple as that. [ There's a little pause as he squints in the air.] It does also make you the royal consort of Hell.
Letting go of another sigh, he cards a set of fingers through his hair and lets his hand fall down there beside him on the couch. Another moment of silence, he looks off to the side before he lets himself look back to Caliban. ]
[ There wasn't any hesitation in Caliban's tone since it was very much what he wished for right now and for the next few hours. If John had any regrets about it after....
well not like it mattered either way. Even he did wish a little more that this was something they both wanted. ]
I wish you to be my husband. My King. My equal in all the ways that matter of Heaven and Earth.
[ John struggles with the idea of marriage. Having found it stupid from his own experiences of seeing how his parents were, to then being rejected by the idea the one time he had maybe wanted it with Alec, it's not anything he's wanted to entertain or deal with again, despite the playful way he'd danced around it a few times with Caliban. Even with the demon being someone who, without a shred of doubt (unlike Alec) wants to be with him in such a way, he still deals with that heartache. With that rejection. Maybe it's just a first love sort of thing. They're said to always remain after all, aren't they?
Regardless, he watches the demon again for a bit before he looks down. ]
Sometimes I think you're more masochistic than sadistic... [ He looks back up to him then. ] ...after all the shit I've put you through.
I know pain, John. And you are far from being able to claim such a lofty title.
[ After all he was a demon who enjoyed hurting people on occasion and besides while John might have hurt him a few times, twisted his heart a few times. It was nothing compared to the idea of losing him in a few days, hours that they had left. ]
And any other day I would seek to remind myself just how sadistic I could be. [ He added with a teasing little glint in his eyes.]
If you truly do not wish this- you can say no. I just would be amiss if I did not express to you what I want from those last moments together.
[ There Caliban goes again with giving him whatever he wants and John can't help but feel some sort of way about that. ]
It's important to you.
[ He says then after taking a moment to lick over his lips. ]
I've been selfish in... this whole thing between us from the get-go and I know you like me for being that way... for not being afraid of saying and getting what I want, but. You deserve it, too.
[ Because how could he deny that otherwise? To go to his death without John being connected to him in a way beyond the contracts was important. If only because he ached for it to have some magical significance.]
So?
[ His eyebrows are arching just a touch because John hasn't said the words yet.]
[ Caliban was just going to hold his palm out as a small spark of that familiar fire magic exploded in his hand for a moment before it finally left a deep, almost blood-red metal ring with various demonic-looking runes that could be the royal symbol of hell and the dark golden jewel that had been carved into the shape of a small flame.]
[ Of course he has a ring. In all honesty, he figures Caliban's probably had something for awhile now.
Looking to it, he huffs a laugh and gives a shake of his head, though it's not in disapproval — more in playful disbelief as he sits up a little more there on the couch. ]
I don't have anything nice to wear.
[ Well, he has that red leather suit he'd worn to that valentines day party forever ago, but. ]
goodbye.
So many people have left him behind here. Against their will, sure, much like all of this is, but. He still thinks of it as that: being left behind.
